Silicone tape is an excellent safety solution for fire props. We use it to cover exposed metal close to the flames : you do not want to touch hot metal by mistake. This is what makes our fire props safer and helps avoid serious burns.
One of the golden rules of fire prop making: as little exposed metal as possible.
Its heat resistance is good enough to be in the fire, on one condition: you must not let it burn without moving. Leave a staff with silicone tape burning on the floor for over 20 seconds and it will start degrading seriously. When in motion, heat dissipates much better. With proper use, the silicone can last many years, sometimes longer than the wicks.
This is not the classic silicone tape you find in hardware stores. This one is 0.5 mm thick and rated for 260 °C.
