Swivels are a piece of hardware you might need for various reasons, though we only recommend them for fire poi if you want to do hyperloops.
Some old-school shops have heavily marketed swivels as necessary for fire poi. In our opinion, they're not. That was true when poi were made of chains : a swivel wouldn't change anything back then. Now that we use ropes (Technora or Static Kevlar), adding a swivel makes the build more complicated, and a single rope all the way just feels better. No wobble, no instability.
We use them as standard on all our Rope Darts. If the head touches the floor while you're spinning, the rope won't tangle, only the head will spin, thanks to the swivel.
