⚠️ This prop is not designed to be set on fire. We know, the name is confusing. But no. Really no. This is training equipment.
Made to order, hand-braided in our workshop. Lead time up to two weeks, we don't always have every color in stock. This is the practice contact staff you actually want to train with. Same dimensions and weight distribution as our Fire Contact Staff, made by hand in whatever color combination you choose, one piece at a time. Honestly, a lot of people end up liking it more than their fire gear.
This practice staff is built to match exactly our fire Contact Staff Monkey Fist
We also have a cheaper practice Contact Staff, made with silicone balls : Contact Staff - Silicone
Who it's for
For beginners who want to start with a beautiful prop that actually makes you want to train, and for experienced spinners who want to stop wearing out their fire gear in practice. The weight distribution makes the staff slow and forgiving, which genuinely helps when you're working on contact technique. But at some point you might just want to take it out because it looks good. That's fine too. For those who perform choreographies with our fire Contact Staff and want something identical to train with, or to adapt their act into a non-fire version.
The real reason to get one
Training on your fire staff is a bad idea. It leaves black marks on your skin and clothes, and every drop wears the wicks down a little more. We've all been there, we all know it's not the right approach.
But beyond the practical side, there's another reason this exists: it's just a nice object, a treat. You choose the colors, we braid it by hand, and what comes out is something unique. Something you're happy to take out at a jam, a workshop, a day performance. It doesn't look like a practice prop. It looks like something you chose.
Sizing
140 cm or 150 cm? As a general rule: if you're taller than 170 cm, go for 150 cm. If you are smaller than 170 cm, then a 140 cm staff is probably a good choice.
In the end, it also depends on personal preference. For horizontal plane tricks like matrix, it seems better to have a longer staff. For vertical tricks, like halo or angel rolls, a shorter staff can be good.
Grip Type
EPDM
Perfect for beginnersA soft and comfortable grip, quite squishy, and ideal in wet conditions. It will become grippier with time as it starts to degrade, it may then leave black marks after long use. It will last one to 2 years before having to be replaced. A solid option for beginners or those who like a grip that can slide in the hand and won't stick to your hair. Also a little more comfy and forgiving than other options, and the cheaper one!
OSCAR Grip
Premium yoga mat styleThe ultimate yoga mat style grip. Yoga mat grips are the favorite of a lot of spinners, the right amount of gripping without being too much, super comfy, and comes in beautiful colors. The problem was they were not durable at all. But that day is over! Oscar, a British staff expert and professional prop maker, finally found the one we were all looking for : the super durable yoga mat grip. After over a year of testing, the grip is intact, showing almost no signs of wear, despite intensive use.
GOAT Grip
Indestructible · Super grippyUltra-durable and very grippy. Great for intense practice, it literally sticks to your skin and makes everything easier. Any contact moves become easier, it's almost like a cheat code. It can be harsh on sensitive skin and slippery in high humidity, and will add more weight in the middle of your staff, we don't recommend it for our 90 cm double staffs as it can mess up the balance.
On every staff : Silicone Tape
We use it to cover exposed metal near the flames, it is a key safety element. Touching hot metal by mistake won't be happening anymore with this special silicone. We use it on all our fire staffs. One of the golden safety rules of making fire props : as little exposed metal as possible. It can handle fire as long as it keeps moving. Leave it burning on the ground for more than 10 seconds and it will degrade quickly. In motion, heat dissipates better and the silicone can last many years.
Option : Silicone Flowers
Our silicone flowers help slow down the staff and improve control for contact moves. They add weight at the ends and can sit close to the flame without melting. They are not a necessity, and some purists will say you're better off learning without them.
How it's built
The Monkey Fist knot at each end is the heart of the design. It's what concentrates weight at the tips, giving the staff a slow, controllable feel that's really useful when you're learning contact moves. Angel rolls, matrix, fishtail - it all works better when the weight is where it needs to be.
The braided rope is chosen for its durability and because it looks great. It's what makes each staff visually unique once you pick your color combination.
Built to exactly the same dimensions as our Fire Contact Staff. So you won't have to adapt anything when you move to the fire version.
