The core is what gives a monkey fist its shape, so we're a bit obsessed with it. We make our wooden balls to size for the monkey fists we make ourselves. Many of you kept asking for them for your DIY builds, so now anyone can get some.
The size of the monkey fist core matters more than you'd think. Too big, and gaps show up between the ropes. Too small, and the knot gets crammed while the ropes overlap. Either way, you lose durability, and that's a shame after all that work.
Does a wick core need to be fire resistant? Nope. It never touches the flame and never gets hot enough to degrade. We use cotton in other builds for the same reason. We've often rebuilt monkey fists on intact wooden balls after a full Kevlar life cycle.
Why beech? It's the toughest wood we've found so far, and we're happy with it.
Should you buy yours from us? If you're going full DIY and have a drill press, you can drill the hole yourself. The hole has to be exactly centered, and that matters a lot, especially for contact staffs. It's already done on our wood balls, so the only thing left to worry about is your monkey fist.

DIY assembly
The ball must be secured to the tube absolutely safely, with several screws going through the ball, the tube and the dowel. Be careful when drilling: the balls can crack, so take it easy when the screw head reaches the wood. For staffs, you'll also need to fix the Kevlar to the ball, with wood glue before tightening and/or with a screw. There are several methods for attaching the ball to a rope, so feel free to ask us. Not that into DIY? We can also do the assembly on request, securing the ball for you on a tube or a rope before shipping.
